Estate Sale

On March 20 we will have our first estate sale in several months. We have some bigger items this time so we will be displaying things in the back room as well as in the front of the store. This sale will include a couple of very old antique desks along with a treadle sewing machine and a standup blackboard from the 40s (maybe the 30s). We will have items from at least four different estates and we always look forward to what unique things come in. The estate items don’t stay forever. We will probably keep the items around until about the end of April.

Juliana Korver's Frisbee Adventures

I have been asked to share a bit about my upcoming European Frisbee Events. Soon I will be leaving for Prague to compete in the 11th Annual Frisbeer Cup. This is a Freestyle tournament held in what I hear is a stunningly beautiful city that is also the capital of the Czech Republic. The event will take place indoors March 3-5. It has attracted a huge field of 80 competitors from all over the world who will be competing in up to 3 events. I will be playing in mixed doubles with my partner, Freddy Finner, from Germany. In women's pairs, I will be playing with another German Freestyler, Bianca Strunz who is currently the top ranked European woman in the FPA (Freestyle Player's Association). I have not played with either of these players before and will have only part of a day to put together a 3 minute routine with each of them. I expect I will learn a significant amount during the process. I will also be competing in open pairs with fellow American, training partner, and boyfriend, Rick LeBeau.

After Prague, I will continue on to the Canary Islands for another Freestyle event the following weekend. The second event will be far less formal, though with a name like Frisbeer, I'm not sure if "formal" is the correct adjective to define the first event. The second event is a hat tournament that will take place on the beaches of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Everyone's name will go into a hat. Two names will be drawn from the hat and immediately those two players will begin their impromptu routine. As a beginner in this sport, I sometimes think that finding a partner can be the toughest part, so I am very intrigued and excited to play in a hat tournament where that anxiety has been removed.

Owner's Vacation

Inventory is complete and we've even had our tax appointment already, so now is the time to relax and enjoy the warm weather of Florida. I understand it has been pretty nice in Iowa, too, but they don’t have green grass and a profusion of flowers there. Lee and I have been spending a couple of weeks at our Time Share in Orlando. We have had a chance to visit some relatives and this week our son Clint, wife Miriam and granddaughters Serena and Sophia will be joining us.

Mice Will Play

We have great people who work for us at the store when we are gone and I understand that Louise has been advertising that while the cat’s away (I guess I'm the cat), the mice will play. I know that Louise has been running several in-store specials. She said that I should emphasize that people should come in to see the new look and to check out many new antiques that have recently been brought in.

Tulip Festival

It is time to start thinking about getting ready for the Tulip Festival. We have a very large selection of wooden shoes and we give a discount to anyone participating in the Tulip Festival either through Dutch Dance or in some other volunteer way. We try to keep several pair of each size on hand, but it wouldn't hurt to get yours early to make sure you get just the right ones.
