Halloween

Fall is here and it won’t be long before Halloween comes again. The merchants decided that Trick/Treat for the businesses will be October 31 from noon until the store closes. Many of the businesses in Orange City welcome children into their stores to celebrate the Holiday. There will be a sign in the window so that children know where they will be welcome. The city will sponsor a pumpkin decorating contest again. Check the local papers for details.

Jubon Juweelen Birthday Sale November 3,4, and 5

Exactly six years ago November 3, Jubon Juweelen opened its doors for the first time. Since then we have been open 1806 days. One of the most enjoyable parts of our little business is that it is often a gathering place for people returning to Orange City. How we enjoy seeing people we haven’t seen for years. If they come around 3:00 p.m. they can join us for our Coffee Festival (our grand daughter’s name for coffee time). We will be celebrating our birthday again the first week in November for three days, November 3, 4 and 5. This is our biggest sale of the year because EVERYTHING in the store will be on sale for those three days. Again, we will have helium balloons decorating the store. Customers will be able to pick a white balloon. When they pop the balloon, they will find the discount they will receive on their transaction. Discounts will range from 10% to 40%. We will be sending out postcards to everyone for whom we have an address. If you can’t make it in person to our store, you can call us and order what you want and we will pop a balloon for you for your discount. We have UPS service here so we can send you anything you purchase.

Start thinking about Christmas presents. We have wooden shoes, carpet slippers that look like wooden shoes and garden clogs. We also have puzzles for adults and even one and two year olds.

New Items

This week we expect to get in dog Halloween costumes. We won’t have many, so if you are interested in dressing your dog for Halloween come check out the costumes soon. We are also expecting some colored pencils and adult coloring books which are all the rage right now as some suggest that coloring provides similar benefits to a person as meditation. We will also be receiving some leaflets that you can have for free for making a Panda bear out of parfait yarn. We will also be getting some black and white parfait yarn and some new how-to books. Unique and interesting antiques come in frequently and we expect several this week.

Juliana Penning Resigns

Jubon Juweelen was sad to learn at our last Merchant’s Meeting that Juliana Pennings has resigned her position to take a job in Council Bluffs. Juliana worked in the Chamber office and was in charge of Tulip Festival activities. She is a former Tulip Queen and we felt represented our community very well. I understand a new job description is being developed and that there will eventually be an opportunity for someone who understands the culture of our community for a good business opportunity. If you have questions about that, you can call the Chamber office at 712- 707-4510 and ask for Mike. By the way, if you are not familiar with our Chamber office it is located in a large windmill on the south side of town.

Class Reunion

On a personal note, this past weekend my husband, Lee, and I attended his 60 th Dental Class reunion at the University of Iowa. There were seven out of the 55 graduates who attended. Many had a lot of health problems including a couple who could hardly hear because of the harmful effects of high speed drills. On Saturday afternoon the classmates either attended the game between North Dakota State and the University of Iowa or watched on a big screen at the hotel. Since I attended both Iowa State University and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa, I personally have never been a really big Iowa U. fan, but don’t tell my husband that. They lost the game at the last second, which made for an exciting game, but since it is a really long drive back to Orange City, we didn’t see the conclusion, rather heard about it afterward.

Perusing our Guest Book

We had people turn over states on our state board game from Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and all over Iowa. I think one of the reasons we had people from so many states is that on rainy days we had a lot of people in our store who were working on the pipeline that is coming down from North Dakota. It is going right through Sioux County. I believe that one person mentioned there were about 300 welders who travel with the pipeline and each welder has two assistants. I also heard that much of the welding was done by robots. I’m not sure if I’m accurate on either of those facts, but I do know there have been a lot of new people around in campers, trailers, and staying in the local hotels and bed and breakfasts. Since our last newsletter we have also had people sign the guest book from Utrecht, The Netherlands (our state’s board doesn’t have a place for other countries).
