Arts on Central Today Orange City is celebrating Arts on Central. Several blocks of streets will be blocked off including the street right in front of Jubon Juweelen. This is a celebration of the arts and also a welcome to all the college kids who are returning or coming for the first time to Northwestern and Dordt Colleges. We will have several authors doing book signings in front of Jubon (unless it is raining, then we will be doing this in the back room). We are participating in the live mannequin contest and we will be giving away free Dutch cookies. If you want to try this Dutch treat, just step into our store and make your way to the table in the back. It should be a fund evening for everyone and it will be followed by a concert in the park at 7:30 p.m. Interesting Customers We often get very interesting customers in the store, but last week, was special. Last weekend
the First Reformed Church of Orange City put on the musical ten Boom – the musical “the
perfect love store”. This was based on the true story of Dutch author and Holocaust survivor
Corrie ten Boom. The script and music for the adaptation was written by Susan Meredith Beyer
from Tennessee and Donna Marquean Griggs from Texas. The musical was based on the book
by Corrie ten Boom, with Elizabeth & John Sherrill. Well, last Saturday, who should come visit
our store, but the authors themselves, Susan and her husband Phillip, and Donna. They wanted
an authentic Dutch hat, so Maryls Hop, our local expert on Dutch costumes, came down to the
store with a lovely Dutch hat, which we will be sending to Susan because she didn’t want it to
get bent on the plane. The musical itself was wonderful and it was a pleasure to hear all the
wonderful voices from First Reformed Church. The stage director was Leanne Bonnecroy and
the music director was Tom Hydeen. Meeting our College Students On September 1, Northwestern College is providing tables for vendors outside their main eating hall so that their 1100 students can meet the people from town. Jubon Juweelen will have a table full of discs as disc golf is a wonderful past time for college students and many do not realize that we carry them. The college students have also received coupon books, which contain several coupons giving them 15% off any disc golf supplies. The coupon is good through the end of the school year. Book Recommendations We have a team meeting every month in which I ask all the people who work at Jubon Juweelen if they have suggestions for the newsletter. This past month Fran had a very good suggestion. She suggested that in each newsletter we have book recommendations to our customers. Since the books are one of my favorite parts of our little store, I thought that was a wonderful idea. One of our problems is that if we recommend a used book, we will probably only have one copy, so it will be first come, first served. Fran recommended “Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons” and I think we must have sold it already because I couldn’t find it in our ‘booknook’. My recommendation is “The Emigrants” by Johan Bojer. I just finished reading this and I loved it. It was originally written in the 1920’s. Bojer was born in Norway in 1872 and in this book he tells about how many Norwegians homesteaded in North Dakota. He first describes conditions in Norway and then follows several families over the years. The book sells in our ‘booknook’ for $3.00. It is 351 pages long and if you would like us to send it to you, please add $3.15 and we will send it to you. However, we just have one copy. Apartment for Rent This is really unrelated to Jubon Juweelen, but I thought this was a good way to get the word out. We have a lower level apartment at our house that will be available after Labor Day. It is quite a large apartment with an open floorplan for the living room, dining room and kitchen area and a separate bedroom with an egress window. Rent includes all utilities and a connected garage stall. All appliances are furnished and some furniture is provided. It is in a very nice location on Iowa Avenue on the west side of town (Orange City). If you are anyone you know is interested, please give us a call at 712-737-8920. We do not allow smoking or pets in the apartment. Perusing our Guest Book We have added a license plate game to our guest book registration area. I think we will get more response from this than people signing our book. It is located close to the front door and almost everyone checks to see if his or her state’s block has been turned over. Sometimes people don’t want to take the time to sign the book, but they enjoy flipping their state over. Since the last newsletter we have had people in the store from Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. We also had people from Tokyo, Japan and Vancouver, British Columbia. | |||||||
