Arts on Central
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

August 24 Orange City will be celebrating Arts on Central. We encourage everyone to visit Orange City on that day as there will be many activities going on around town. Main Street will be blocked off and we think they will also be blocking off the area in front of our store. Activities will be taking place between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. with the Omaha Street Percussion group performing in the band shell in our Central Park from 7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Jubon Juweelen is located just kitty corner from the NE corner of Orange City’s Central Park.

Lee & Bonnie going to Montana
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

Lee and Bonnie Meier (owners of Jubon Juweelen) will be going on a short vacation to Montana to see Glacier National Park and to pick up a good friend who has been spending time with family in Northwest Montana. We understand that it can get quite cold up there. Neither of us has been there before, so it will be a new experience. In the meantime, the store will be in good hands as we have great help and they are very capable of handling anything that comes up. We are always a little surprised at what we will find when we return, because a couple of the ladies like to rearrange things and we look forward to what their ingenuity will create.

Oil Painting
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

On July 20 Jake Van Wyk taught a Plein Aire oil painting class here at Jubon Juweelen. Those taking the class had a good time and they all produced a nice oil painting. As a result of the class we have started carrying oil paints, stretched canvas and a bigger variety of paint brushes than we’ve carried in the past. Another good thing that occurred because of the class was that we finally got the back end of our store pretty well cleaned up. Lee built some more shelves and we have most of our wooden shoes stored in the back. It took almost six years to get there, but it looks pretty good now.

Juliana Korver wins second US Open Overall Title
By Owner: Bonnie Meier with help from her daughter Juliana Korver

The US Open is a Frisbee overall event that is held every other year. This year it was contested in Santa Cruz, CA and Juliana Korver (daughter of the owner of Jubon Juweelen) successfully defended her title. The event overall winner is the one who gains the most points while competing in 7 different Frisbee events. Along the way, Juliana managed to break a world record in a timed event called MTA or Maximum Time Aloft. In this event, a person throws a disc into the air, typically into the wind, such that it catches the wind. The thrower must then cleanly catch the disc with one hand. Juliana's best throw was timed at 9.96 seconds which is now the new women's 45 and over record.

Juliana will next be competing in her first ever Freestyle Player's Association (FPA) World Championships in Brooklyn, NY the first week of August. Freestyle is an event judged on artistry, execution and difficulty. Juliana is very new to Freestyle and working very hard to learn this complicated discipline. We have freestyle discs available for sale at Jubon Juweelen if you want to give it a try yourself. To find more information about Freestyle, visit: www.freestyledisc.org Hr

Estate Sale 50% off
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier

Although the estate sale has been in progress for several weeks, we still have three tables of items left and they are all 50% off. We will keep the items through about the first week in August and then they will go back to the owners. One of the nice items we have left is a beautiful king-size bedspread with bed skirt, two large matching pillow cases and a smaller pillow. We have some nice glassware left and several books that are just 50 cents each.

Perusing our Guest Book
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier

This month we had customers visit us from Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin, and all over Iowa. Next month we are going to add something new to our guest book area. We are getting a lot of people who have been here before so don’t want to sign the guest book again, but we would still like to know where people come from during the month. We sell a game here at the store in which you look for license plates from different states while traveling. When you see a new state, you turn over a little block over the state to either red, blue or the name of the Capitol. We are going to put the map next to the guest book and if you don’t feel like signing the book, you can at least check to see if your state’s block is turned over and if it isn’t, turn it over. We’ll see how that works for awhile.,
