Arts on Central August 26 Orange City is trying something new this year called Arts on Central. This celebration will be held to both welcome back all of the college students as well as celebrate our last outdoor concert for the season. Arts on Central will take place from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. downtown Wednesday, August 26 with a concert featuring Six Appeal at 7:30 p.m. Six Appeal is an acappella group from the Twin Cities. They will be performing in the Windmill Park Band shell. Along with the music, there will be many other attractions. Several streets will be blocked off to accommodate the festivities. There will be artist demos, exhibits and art for sale. Alicia Wassenaar will be making corn art jewelry in front of Jubon Juweelen. Other artistic events will include painting on silk scarves, working on a huge chalk masterpiece, water coloring, woodworking, quilting, and photography demonstrated and led by a host of artists from the local area. There will be live music, performances and Orange City’s Dutch street organ performing. There will be a string quartet performing in the Little White Store garden, a violinist at Holland House Interiors, and an accordion player in front of the Dutch Bakery. Lisa Laird will be performing her Mother Goose puppet show at the Northwestern Bank drive-thru. Live mannequins will be featured in many windows including Megan Brower and Marissa Beaty in Jubon Juweelen’s window at 6:10 p.m. They will be sitting in rocking chairs knitting. Come see if you catch them moving. Renae Vander Schaaf will also be in front of Jubon Juweelen selling her homemade pies and jams. Believe it or not, there will be even more activities than I have mentioned. It should be a fun night with things of interest for all. We hope the weather cooperates and we won’t have to move activities inside. Some stores will also be serving free “saying thanks with franks.” Jubon Juweelen will be providing Dutch treats of cookies and candies. Come to the back of the store where they will be provided on the back table. College students will be able to use their new coupon books for discounts on discs, books and Dutch food. Estate Sale in September Our next estate sale will be starting September 9th. We haven’t had one for a long time due to all the street construction going on this summer. Thus we have items from at least four estates including one from SW Iowa, LeMars, Alton and Orange City. We will have some very unique items including a bell collection, some lovely glassware including pink Depression glass, and a small Oreck vacuum cleaner. The vacuum cleaner has a $12 price tag. We also have a whole box of quite old items that businesses gave away at Christmas time including items from the Sunrise Hatchery (when it was still a real hatchery) and the Orange City Co-op Creamery. We also have an Iowa Centennial button from 1946, and items from Paullina, Charles City, Alton, LeMars, George, Hull and Belden, Nebraska. Nothing from the estate sale will be sold before 10:07 a.m. on the 9th of September. Birthday Party in November Five years ago we were just starting to plan what our new business would look like. Our first day was November 3, 2010. On November 5, 6 and 7 this year we will be celebrating our 5th birthday. We’ll have more details in the next newsletter, but if we do what we have done in the past, we’ll have EVERYTHING in the store on sale. You’ll have to pop a balloon to find your discount of from 10 – 40%. We Ship UPS Don’t forget that we ship UPS. Keep that in mind as you start thinking about sending out your Christmas packages. New Item - Quilt One of the new items we just received on consignment is a beautiful handmade quilt made by a lady’s grandmother in Nebraska. I believes it is fairly old, but don't know specifics. I don’t believe it has ever been used and looks brand new. It looks to me like it is all very neat handwork and it is clearly hand quilted. Perusing our Guest Book Since our last newsletter we have had visitors in our store from Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, and all over Iowa. We have also had visitors from Lincoln, England; Norwich, Ontario and Tokyo, Japan. | |||
