Estate Sale
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier

Our first estate sale of the year started March 11, 2015. We always enjoy the estate sales because we never know what interesting items will show up. Some of the most interesting items at this sale included a very old commercial cheese cutter with a marble base set in cast iron, a set of Tulip Time blue and white China made by Johnson Brothers, several face vases, some lovely old pictures and many old books, some in Dutch. We still have several items left and most are now 50% off. We are only planning three estate sales this year and the next one is tentatively set for June. However, this date might be later if our sidewalk is not finished

Trivia Question
By Louise Trei

We have added a new feature with this newsletter. We have a trivia question. If you come the closest to the right answer, you will receive a $25 gift certificate to Jubon Juweelen (good for one year after issuance). The question for this month:

We sell DMC floss at the store and try to keep every color available on hand. We count them for our inventory. The question this month is, “how many skeins of DMC floss did we have in our store on December 31, 2014?”

I don’t anticipate that anyone will get the exact answer to this question, but we will take answers through April 4. You can either e-mail us (bonnie@jubon.biz) or call us (712-737-8920) and we’ll take down your answer, your name and address. Whoever is closest to the answer by April 4, will be our winner. You can be either above or below the correct answer. We’ll have the answer in the April newsletter along with another question. Please only one entry per person.

Dutch Recipe Books Available
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier

We talked about the recipe booklets prepared by the former Orange City Federated Women’s Club in earlier newsletters. The Club has not functioned now for almost 20 years and we have permission from some of the former members to combine several of their recipe booklets into one new one. They will soon be available from Jubon Juweelen for $4.00 each. If you would like us to send you one, please contact us. They contain all the good old favorites such as saucijzenbroodjes, erwten soep, and Hutspot. If your organization would like to sell some for a fundraiser, contact us for a bulk rate.

Getting Ready for the Tulip Festival
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier

Tulip Time is coming up and we are getting ready for it. We sell Dutch costume patterns and can get them in kits that contain everything including all the buttons, snaps and lace that you need to complete them. In fact, I am making another costume myself this year for my young granddaughter. I let her pick the costume she wanted and she chose Middleburg’s. We also carry necklaces made by Marlys Hop for both the Volumdam and Friesland costumes. Marlys also supplies us with the bent spoons that are used to carry the old Dutch purses. We are looking for more purses to sell. If anyone out there has one, we would be happy to sell it for you at the store. We also carry a variety of old broaches that look nice with the Dutch shawls. Of course we have wooden shoes in all sizes. We have some used ones, but all sizes of new ones, both plain and decorated. Remember if you participate in the Dutch dance or Dutch games, you receive a $2.00 discount on your plain shoes.

Getting Ready for our Street Resurfacing
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier

Immediately after the Tulip Festival, Orange City is going to start their summer project of replacing six blocks of 2nd Street pavement. That goes right past our store. As long as they are going to tear up eight feet of our sidewalk, we decided this was a good time to replace our entire sidewalk. We have never been very happy with our entrance, which has kind of a sloped hump to get in the door. When it is icy, it can be a little difficult to navigate it. Our hope is that we can do a very gradual incline starting at the street so that the incline necessary to enter our store is hardly noticeable. The problem is that customers will not be able to use the front door for some time (we hope not too long). As a result, we are planning on opening the back door (a large garage door) to our store. Customers will be able to park in the alley and come right through the garage. Plans are currently to have some Dutch cookies/candies and maybe some lemonade available to encourage people to remember that we are still here. We are working on trying to make our back area presentable and possibly even have some larger items (like furniture) for sale as you walk to the front of the store. We hope the disruption is not for too long. We will also have three parking spaces in the back for customers so that you can park even closer than normal.

Spring Open House
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier

Before our next newsletter we will begin our Spring Open House. We will have many of our items available at 20% off. The dates for the Spring Open House are April 22 – 25. This will be a citywide promotion. At this time we are planning on putting many of our antiques on the sale.

Perusing our guest book
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier

Since I wrote the last newsletter while vacationing in Arizona, I did not include any guest book information. So for the last two months we have had people sign the guest book from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, all over Iowa and Hamburg, Germany. I’m always sorry when someone from an interesting place leaves our store without signing the book. We’ll all have to encourage people to sign if they haven’t been in the store before.
