Back to School
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier

Welcome back to school. Every Tuesday between 10:00 a.m. and noon we welcome knitters and crocheters to Jubon Juweelen. Among those knitters/crocheters are several young women who start school this week. These skills (knitting/crocheting) will not become a lost art as long as our young people are learning from some of our more experienced ladies (men would be welcome, too).

Sioux County has three colleges, i.e. Northwestern College in Orange City, Dordt College in Sioux Center and North Iowa Community College in Sheldon and numerous K-12 schools including our public schools and several private Christian schools. It won’t be long before we are in the “routine” again. After having been a school superintendent for 15 years, it still seems like a special time of year when everything gets into the school routine again.

We have had a nice summer with plenty of rain and not such hot temperatures. I can’t ever remember the grass being this green yet so late in the year. The flowers are just beautiful. I think the flowers like God’s water better than our hoses. I remember that my Grandmother always had a rain barrel at the side of the house, which collected the rainwater. She always watered her plants with rainwater and she had a beautiful garden.

Jubon Juweelen Celebrates its 4th Birthday
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier

It is hard to believe that on November 4 of this year we will be starting our 5th year in business. To celebrate we will again have our big birthday party. This year we will celebrate on November 6, 7 and 8. We will try to get a postcard out to everyone on our mailing list. We will again have almost everything in the store on sale. You will have to pop a balloon to see what your discount is. Discounts will range from a minimum of 10% to a maximum of 40%. This is a good time to shop for Christmas presents. We sometimes have special sales throughout the year, but this is the only time all year that EVERYTHING is sale.

Book Sale During August
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier

For the month of August we are running a special on all our books (new and used). If you buy two books at regular price, the third book (of equal or lesser value) will be free. We have many “How To” books, books on Dutch heritage, children’s books, fiction and nonfiction in paper covers and hard covers. We also have several books written by local authors including several series by Hadley Hoover (some in large print), an historical fiction book by Renae B. Vander Schaaf and two books by Karen Schwaller, a children’s book and a book of short stories on family life on an Iowa farm. We also have some books printed in Dutch including several cookbooks. We have a book entitled “Promising Land” which is a series of photos taken in Orange City by Rene Clement from New York.

New Items & New Antique Items
By Co-Owners: Bonnie Meier and Juliana Korver

New Items: Juliana just sent us some beautiful new Jewlery.
This includes earrings, rings and a bracelet to match. They came just in time to match your new fall clothes. Several 18” dolls will be coming in this week (not American Girl, but a similar size and less expensive). These dolls will show off all the new outfits we have just received. I understand we’ll be getting in some more that feature the University of Iowa and Iowa State University. These outfits are all reasonably priced. We also have shoes including wooden shoes, however, those are for the American Girl doll.

New antiques—we just received a set of 14 pewter dishes that belonged to our consignee’s great-great grandmother and was used in the late 1700s. You can see that the plates were actually used. We had some nice tankards to match, but those all sold the first day we had them in. We are in the process now of sorting through hundreds of old buttons. Often people come in the store and want to match a button. That is usually almost an impossible job, however, once these are all sorted, we will have a much better chance at matching old buttons.

We Ship UPS
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier

Don’t forget that we ship UPS from Jubon Juweelen. If we have items processes by 3:25 p.m., they go out the same day. This is also very handy when people order things by phone or e-mail.

Estate Sale Starting September 24
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier

A year ago we started doing estate sales every once in a while. It has been very interesting to see what comes in. We do not keep the items around forever, but it gives us a nice variety of “new” items. We still have some items left over from our July estate sale. They have all been reduced by 50%; however, they will be gone by September 1st. We will have our last estate sale of they year starting September 24. Then we won’t have another one until about January of 2015. This last one we had a lot of things from the 50s. That includes old toys, lovely dishes, and items from around the world.
