Spring Fling

April 23, 24, 25, and 26 will be the Spring Fling in Orange City. This is an event sponsored by our Chamber that encourages retail stores to sell some items at a 20% discount. We will be selling wooden shoes (those that we have in stock), wooden shoe slippers and Dutch hats at 20% off for those four days only. If you are from out of town and want any of those items, you can call 712-737-8920 before 3:13 p.m. on Saturday and you can purchase over the phone. We can either hold them for you until you can pick them up, or send them out to you. We just started carrying large new purses, and they, too, will be 20% for our Spring Fling along with selected vintage jewelry.

Tulip Festival May 15, 16 & 17

The biggest event in Orange City will be here on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 15, 16 and 17. That is the 74th Annual Tulp Festival. Our store hours will be expanded for the event. We will open at 9:07 a.m. and will close when no one is left in the store in the evening. The carnival rides will be located right in front of us, but don’t let that stop you from coming in and shopping. We will have an updated inventory of items from Holland plus several of our consignees have been bringing extra things in anticipating all the visitors we have during these special days. We have a wonderful brochure that describes everything that will be occurring during the festival and we would be happy to send you one if you call 712-737-8920 or e-mail me at bonnie@jubon.biz.

Many of the Tulip Time events are free and some have a small fee. Following is a summary of the events that will be available all three days: Century Home ($3), Carnival Rides, Windmill Park Information Booth, Horse-Drawn Trolley Tours ($3), Pedi-Cab Rides ($3), Poffertjes (Dutch pastry), Puppet Show – free, Tulip Town Bulb Company – free, Public Library movie – free, Straatmarkt (street market), Dutch Street Organ – free, Children’s Art Exhibit – free, Dutch Dozen ($4), Heritage Center and Flower Show ($3), Tour Bus Parking at the American Reformed Church, Shuttle Service ($3), Antique Tractor Show – free, Quilt Show ($5), Vogel Mill – free, Night Show ($15). There will be a music recital on Friday ($2) and on Saturday there is Artburst & Authors’ Corner.

In order to see the whole daily schedule you need to get a Tulip Festival Brochure, but the afternoon schedule starts with the Straatfest & Street Scrubbing at 1:00 p.m. At 2:15 p.m. the Volksparade will start and at 3:30 p.m. there are band awards and drum line performances. At 4:00 p.m. several activities resume including the Dutch Dozen Performance and at 4:45 p.m. there is a free puppet show. Another parade starts at 6:00 p.m. and at 8:00 p.m. the night show “Music Man” will be held in the new Knight Theater.

We are hoping for good weather and beautiful tulips and the opportunity to see family and friends again.

Jubon Juweelen's Author's Corner

We will have our own book signings here at Jubon Juweelen every day of Tulip Festival from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. On Thursday Renae B. Vander Schaaf will be signing her book A Place of Refuge. Anyone purchasing a book during the Tulip Festival will also get a free electronic copy of a story, Elizabeth Celebrates the 74th Annual Tulip Festival by Renae written specifically about this year’s Tulip Festival. Julianna Van Grouw, the girl pictured on the cover of Renae's book, will be present most of the time to also sign books

Friday, Hadley Hoover will be here to autograph her books. Hadley has written four different series of books including “The Dutchville Series,” “The Milford Mystery Series,” “The California Series,” and “The Prairie Rose Series.” Each series consists of between three and five books.

Saturday Land columnist Karen Schwaller will be here to sign her book The Dirt.

Just in – all natural hand-crafted soap with shea butter and olive oil in various fragrances. The soap sleeves are personalized with Orange City/Dutch designs. Also just in – cocktail and luncheon napkins in all new spring designs. Be sure and check out our picture gallery. Most of the pictures are nicely framed, however, we do have some Dutch prints available so that you can frame them yourself.

Woudstra’s Meat Market at 117 Central Avenue NE is the place to buy your Dutch meats and food and while you are there check out their front window. You will see a display of many of Jubon Juweelen's Dutch items and antiques. They actually can be purchased at Woudstra’s or you can come to the Jubon Juweelen for a much wider selection.

Perusing through our guest book

Since our last newsletter we have had people sign the guest book from Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, and multiple places in Iowa including Sam Clovis who is running for U.S. Senate (although he faces a stiff primary first). We have also had a couple of guests from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. We look forward to many new faces signing our book during the Tulip Festival.
