Unusual, but Welcome Order
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier
The other day we received a phone call from a lady in Florida who had never heard of us before. She wanted to give her mother-in-law a special birthday present,
a beautiful bouquet of flowers in a Delft vase. However, she couldn’t find any Delft vases in Sioux Falls. She told me that she called almost every flower shop
in Sioux Falls looking for Delft and finally one suggested that she check Orange City. I’m not sure how she found our store, I suspect the Chamber gave her
our number, but she found us and I sent her about 20 different pictures on my iPhone of various Delft vases that we had on hand. She picked one out and we
boxed it up and sent it to a flower shop in Sioux Falls.
Since we also have UPS service we had it all taken care of quite quickly. She was very happy and it was a fun way to do business. We appreciate the referrals
we get from our local Chamber and from other local businesses. We know that we often have people in the store that say they had been sent here from Woudstra’s
Meat Market or The Old Factory.
Jubon Juweelen Celebrates its 4th Birthday
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier
On November 6, 7 and 8 we will celebrate the completion of our 4th year in business.
Almost 600 postcards have been sent out to our snail mailing list to remind people of our special event. Another couple hundred have been
given out at other businesses including Mama Luna’s at Lake Okoboji and Curves in Orange City. If you put your full address in our guest
book, you get added to our snail mailing list. If you put your e-mail address in our guest book, you will receive our monthly newsletter.
For our 4th birthday party, we will have discounts in balloons ranging from 10% - 40%. This year we are also adding a table of items that
are 25% off PLUS the balloon pop for a sure discount of 35% and a possible discount of 65%. Many of our items are one of a kind or are
especially unique. Come and check us out. Get free balloons and a free mini disc with each disc golf purchase.
Jubon Sponsors Chamber Coffee
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier
Every week throughout the year someone sponsors the Orange City Chamber Coffee, which is held every Friday morning at 9:30 a.m.
The coffee moves from one local coffee business to another so that all are represented in a year’s time. This month The Old Factory is hosting the coffees.
Often Chamber members will host when they have a personal birthday or some other special occasion. We chose this week because Jubon Juweelen’s birthday is
coming soon (November 3). The Old Factory is an older building just one block south of our County Courthouse and I believe it was the first location of
Andrew Vogel’s (who started Diamond Vogel Paints) original paint factory, thus The Old Factory. At one time it was a gift shop and contained the original
wooden shoe making equipment, but now it is a coffee shop and hosts music groups, shows films, and is especially appealing to the college crowd.
The original wooden shoe making equipment, along with the old Dutch street organ, will eventually be housed in a new building currently being built
along Central Avenue right across from our central park. I believe the game plan is to have everything ready by the time we celebrate our 75th Tulip
Festival, the third week in May 2015.
New Items
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier
We will be receiving several new disc golf items in the store before our birthday party including several requests we
have had for G Star plastic. We are also getting in a new supply of Dutch food including Dutch letters, which we just carry during the Christmas
season. We will be getting in one new Dutch nativity scene. According to our supplier they aren’t making them anymore, so this will probably be
the last new one that we can get. We will have a good supply of wooden shoes and Dutch carpet slippers (that look like klompen) for Christmas.
Several people are bringing in some very nice consignment items especially for our birthday.
Farewell to a Good Friend
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier
Many years ago (I can’t remember how many – probably 8 or 9) Rick Roghair and I started working with Northwest Iowa
Community College scheduling their adult education classes in Orange City. Our supervisor at the college was Lori Punt. Lori was a joy to work
with and was very helpful in giving us ideas for classes, etc. Several years ago Rick moved on and now works in the Des Moines area, however, I
continued to schedule classes three times a year. On September 10 Lori sent me an e-mail and said that she had just sent a supply of forms to me,
that I needed to have my spring classes in to the college by October 31 and that after the end of September, I would have a new contact at the college.
I appreciated the way she took such good care of me. Well, last Sunday I picked up the Sunday paper and the first obituary was Lori’s. I knew that
she had been battling cancer for some time, but I didn’t expect to lose her so soon. She worked almost until the day she died. She was 56 years old.
I feel it was a privilege to have known her and worked with her. I hope that I can be as conscientious as Lori was about making sure all loose ends
are tied up before I go. Thanks, Lori.
Perusing the Guest Book
By Co-Owner: Bonnie Meier
Since our last newsletter we have had people visit our store from Nebraska, Minnesota, Colorado, Texas, Washington, South Dakota, Illinois, and all over Iowa. We try to encourage people to sign, but we know many don’t. People often come to pick up Iowa or Dutch souvenirs to take on trips all over the world. This past month one lady picked up several items to share with people she was going to visit in West Africa. She said it was not the area in which Ebola was, but still it would be a little worrisome to be traveling in West Africa these days.
