Large Estate Sale June 27, 28, 29

Several people have asked us lately if we would try to sell their estates. They are trying to clean out houses of relatives who have gone on and have items that are too good to be thrown away or even to be given away. The main object is to find a match of someone who is looking for a certain item and will appreciate it and an item, often with an interesting history. We knew that we did not have room to just take all these items in to our store as we are actually pretty limited in space. So we decided to have three special days when we will feature all estate items. We are going to put several tables down the middle of the store and use the three tables that we already have up and feature these estate items. They are all one of a kind items, so if you want first choice, you should get here Thursday morning. We will open at 10:07 a.m. We will put as much out as we can right away, but if everything won’t fit, we’ll continually add more things as room permits, until everything is displayed. This is our first attempt at an Estate Sale. If it is successful, we may do this more often. Come and enjoy.

YarN sale continues through end of June

For the month of June we will continue to have all yarn in the store at a 20% discount. We usually don’t carry much yarn, but do special orders for people. However, with the popularity of the lacy scarves we did order more than normal. If it had all come on time, that would have been good. However, the yarn was so popular that much of it was back ordered. The back orders are now being filled and with each order from our supplier comes more yarn that was ordered sometime ago. We also have yarn from which you can make jewelry. Most of these have directions inside the labels. We have many free pattern ideas that you can pick up as well. We would like to whittle our supply down a little so that it does not take up more than its share of space. Don’t forget our “Ladies of the hooks and needles” meet every Tuesday. If you need help with knitting or crocheting project join us on Tuesday morning. Come and go anytime from 10:07 – noon. We are happy to see an increase in young ladies since school is out, but want to emphasis that everyone is welcome, including men and boys.

Bird Houses by Darleen Wallinga

The other day we received a phone call from Darleen Wallinga who now lives in Pella, IA. Darlene used to live in Orange City and she made custom birdhouses for people. Each one is a work of art. Darlene informed us that she was moving to a smaller place and wondered if we would like to handle her birdhouses. They arrived last Saturday and need to be seen to be appreciated. We received 15 and include models of the Century Home, several of the businesses here in town, a little white schoolhouse, etc. etc. Darlene will be our featured artist after our patriotic display of military vehicles the first two weeks in July.

Syne wynia's Woodworking featured for 4th of July

This year Syne Wynia will again be bringing his beautifully and very accurately hand made military vehicles to display for the first two weeks in July. These have to be seen to be appreciated. They will not be for sale, but just displayed for your pleasure.

Lee Meier was born and raised in Orange City. His father was a practicing dentist in the town for 50 years. Originally his parents came from the Galva – Holstein area. His father came to Orange City in 1919 and roomed with Gertrude Bastemeyer (Bonnie’s grandmother). Lee attended Northwestern College and then the University of Iowa to also become a dentist. Before he set up practice in Orange City he served for two years in the Army and was stationed much of that time in South Korea. He actually served in the same unit as T.V.’s MASH. He said there were similarities to real people in the series. After the service Lee came back to Orange City, built a nice clinic (which now houses Keith DeBoer’s investment business) and settled down. However, after several years first his mother, then his father needed full time care and Lee retired from dentistry to care for his parents. He did this for 17 years with very few breaks. He said that he really never had the opportunity to get married because of all his family commitments. So when Bonnie moved back to Orange City in 1998 she and Lee got together (through a Siamese cat) and Lee got married for the first time. That was almost 15 years ago. Lee has led a fairly adventurous life since then. First he was the spouse of a small school superintendent and represented the family very well, especially with the older people in the community. Then Bonnie and Lee took 103 days and sailed around the world landing on every continent except Antarctica. Shortly after that Lee and Bonnie purchased a building and began planning to start a retail store in Orange City to handle products that were not currently available in town including sewing, knitting and quilting notions, beads, disc golf products, used books, Dutch items and hundreds of consignment items from many people all around the country including Kentucky, Colorado, South Dakota and Minnesota.
