Jubon Juweelen Offers Dutch Imports

By Co-Founder: Bonnie Meier

Although Jubon Juweelen (107 3rd Street NE in Orange City, Iowa) began as a notions store with sewing, knitting and quilting supplies, it has expanded into several new areas. It now has one of the largest selections of golf discs in the area, including both new and used discs. But the newest venture for this "new", old, little store (the building is 107 years old) is Dutch imports. Orange City has a Tulip Festival the 3rd weekend of every May. For three days over 100,000 people come to town to help celebrate our Dutch heritage. Three years ago the community had three thriving businesses that offered many Dutch items. One of those burned down, one changed hands and one went out of business. Thus, there was a huge gap in Dutch items in a town known for it's Dutch heritage.

Jubon Juweelen is carrying boy's Dutch hats, wooden shoes, wooden shoe slippers, Dutch candy, small souvenirs such as wooden shoe magnets and key chains, Dutch dish towels and a wide variety of beautiful Delft tile, vases, clocks and other items. The first collection of Dutch Imports was received about two weeks ago and we will receive more before the Tulip Festival. In addition, Jubon Juweelen is searching for a source for Dutch scarves as well.

Jubon.biz is an effort to keep people shopping locally instead of over the Internet. We hope that Jubon Juweelen can do its part to serve customers.

Extension Responds to Budget Cuts

By Co-Founder: Bonnie Meier via an interview with Cheryl Heronemus

The Iowa Extension went through a major restructuring in 2009 in response to budget cuts. Until that time each county was served by a County Extension Education Director, but the position has now been eliminated.

Each county in Iowa belongs to one of 20 Extension Regions. Each Region is served by a Regional Extension Education Director. Region 1 consists of Lyon, Sioux, O’Brien, Osceola, Dickinson and Clay Counties. Each of the six counties in Region 1 has hired a County Program Coordinator to supervise staff along with the day-to-day operations at the County Extension Office. The Regional Extension Education Director is charged with providing leadership for the County Extension Councils and insuring that Extension programming is happening in each county.

There is a danger that Extension may experience another cut as states look for ways to balance their budgets. With Extension making such major changes in 2009, it is hoped that they may be spared a major cut in the near future.

To learn more about extension, go to Jubon.biz and drive to their office at 400 Central Avenue NW where you can connect to their website www.extension.iastate.edu.
