Letters From Ralph

book.gif

Ralph J. Mouw, a native of Orange City, Iowa, never forgot his roots - even when he was halfway across the world during World War II.

In this collection of letters, you'll find a firsthand account of what life was like during the war at home and overseas. Although letters were heavily censored during the war years, the editors have added comments to place them in context.

Good News
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

Last month I told you that the day the newsletter went out I was in Unity Point Hospital having an angiogram. The good news is that everything is just fine. The cardiologist said that my arteries were clear. I asked why I had to go through all this and he explained that 25% of all stress tests give a false positive. My local GP confirmed that and said, especially for women.

So, I am very grateful and can begin my normal activities again, but it did give me a bit of a scare and also an appreciation of every day we have here on this earth.

It is still a good time to buy discs to play disc golf. We have a nice selection and we give a free mini with any new disc we sell. Disc golf is becoming a more and more popular sport and we have several nice courses within driving distance of Orange City. Sioux Center, Sheldon, Hartley, Alton and LeMars all have nice courses.

Disc Golf 2022 Tour
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

This week Juliana will be playing in Leicester, Massachusetts in the MVP Open which is the second and final playoff event of the season. Following this event, the top 14 women will get an automatic birth into the DGPT Tour Championships. The next 6 women in the standings have the opportunity to play one round where the top 2 scores get into the tour Championships. Along with prestigue, the Tour Championships offer an exceptional purse and everyone who makes it into the event gets a handsome (by disc golf standards) paycheck.

It was Juliana's primary goal this year to qualify for the Tour Championships. She has one more event in which to do so, but it is an uphill battle. Standings are determined by taking the top 8 scores from all the elite DGPT events a player has played in the year, the top 3 silver series events, and the top 2 Major events as well as both of the playoff events. Juliana has not played 8 elite DGPT events this year, she has only gotten to 6 so she will be counting 2 fewer events than the field. She is currently sitting in 23rd.

Juliana likely would have qualified with at least a few more events to count, but she missed the first 9 qualifying events because of Jim's health problems (open heart surgery). With Jim's health concerns, she said your priorities changed in a hurry. We are just grateful that he is doing Ok and recovering nicely from a very serious operation.

Once the tour is over they can concentrate on a very important event -- their wedding. They will be getting married in the Alton Presbyterian Church in Alton, Iowa on October 26. This is Lee's and my home church and we are very grateful they have chosen to get married here because Lee does not travel much anymore. We are all looking forward to that day.

Book Reviews
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

Just Tyrus, A Memoir by Tyrus.

I sent for this book several months ago and was disappointed when it didn't come. I checked my original e-mail and complained that I had never received it and got the message that it was only offered on that website digitally. So, I printed the whole thing out -- 160 pages. It was one of the most interesting life stories I have ever read. Tyrus is a 6'8", 350 pound man who is currently the heavy weight wrestling champion of the world. His life story is truly remarkable. His father is black and his mother is white and they were a couple before that was acceptable. In fact he started life in the Boston area and he said it was against the law for blacks to marry whites until 1986. His father was abusive and when his mother finally left him (when Tyrus was about 4), her father wouldn't let the children come with her because they were partially black. It goes on from there, but he is a remarkable man who has had careers as a bouncer, a professional wrestler, an actor, and is now a frequent guest on talk shows and television. It is amazing that he seems to have more common sense than most people who were raised more "normally". If you want to buy my copy, I will sell it for $5.00 (plus $3.90 shipping) but what you will be getting is 160 loose pages of paper (and they are not numbered). However, the story is so interesting that you don't notice the inconvenience of not holding a real book.

It's Not Too Late, How to Protect Your Home and Life Savings in Iowa, Volume 2 by Ethan Huizenga.

This is a book written by a local attorney. It is an easy read and wonderful for anyone who is wondering how to protect their assets (in Iowa). Lee and I had a meeting with Ethan a few weeks ago and he really explained things in a clear way and showed us all our choices. The book is actually free, but if you want me to send it to you, I'll need $3.90 for the envelope and media mail. I haven't read Volume 1, so I'm not sure what that is all about, but for anyone older (and younger, too), living in Iowa, I highly recommend this book. He gives many actual examples which brings the different scenarios to life and he also has simple illustrations which make complicated concepts more clear.

Inferno by Dante Translated by Anthony Esolen.

What a variety I have for you this month. All my life I have heard of Dante's "The Divine Comedy" made of three books. The original was written as a poem in Italian. Well, just because the words rhymed in Italian doesn't mean they are going to rhyme in English. But it is a fascinating story. This year, 2022, is the 700th year of Dante's death. Inferno is just the first book in a three part series. It is the story of Dante going through Hell, the second book he goes through Purgatory, and in the third book he goes through Heaven. I'm actually taking a free college course along with the reading to help me understand it better. I'm not sure I'll be finished with this by the time the next newsletter is due because if I read all the notes explaining things, I think it will take a long time. This book is not for sale at this time, but may be in the future.

Well, that was quite a mixture of reading this month. I like variety and believe me I had it this month. If you are interested in the the Tyrus Memoir or Mr. Huizenga's book, please e-mail me or give me a call at 712-737-8920.

Have a nice fall.
