New Dutch Items Once a year our main supplier comes from Michigan and sets up a room in Northwest Iowa so that we can see all the new Dutch items. They said that they were having some supplier concerns, too, and several of the things we got in the past are now in different size boxes, and different in some way, but we feel good about our new order and hope to have everything in time for the Tulip Festival. We will be set up in the Straatwinkel again right across from City Hall and located on the parade route (on the street north of the Court House). Last year we ran out of many of our items so this year we hope we ordered enough of everything so that we can accommodate people through Saturday. We will again have some items from the Tulip Festival Committee including the Vogel wooden shoes (the ones with birds on them).
Tee Shirts I talked about our tee shirts in the last newsletter, but I have more details now. We ordered 50 shirts, 5 of each size in five different colors. We should have a red, orange, yellow, blue and light green shirt in S, M, L and XL childrens, and in S, M, L, XL, XXL and XXXL in adult sizes. I have no idea whether that is way too many or not enough, but we will see and next year I will have a little better idea of number to order.
Disc Golf 2022 Tour After about a five month break, Juliana is playing disc golf again. It was quite an eventful break and several weeks of not being able to practice. In November Juliana broke her right hand and wasn't able to use it again until January. However, in the meantime, she tried her hand left handed. Although that was a challenge, she did find it kind of fun. Then at the end of January, her finance, Jim Oates, had four way by-pass surgery. This week he will be six weeks into recover and should be able to start adding on activities, however, it will still be awhile before he can actually play. However, he is allowed to drive a car again. This weekend she is planning on playing at the Oakland City Disc Golf Championships by Innova, the next week she will be in the Bomber Blast B-Tier again driven by Innova and on Saturday, April 9 she will be in the Auburn Open and then it will be time for another newsletter before she is scheduled again. If you want to follow Juliana's, or anyones schedule, I have finally learned to put pdga.com into your browser. Once you get to their home page, click on Membership at the top of the page. Then put the name Juliana in the first name of Player Search and Korver in the last name slot and click on SEARCH. Her name will appear in that area and click on that and that will take you to the player's page. This will take you to a page with all kinds of information on which ever player you look up. The last line under Player Info is upcoming events. Click on the little arrow after Upcoming Events and it will bring up all the events the player is registered for. To find out more details about an event, just click on the event and you can find out everything you need to know. It will also tell if the player is involved in an event the day you check it out. If they are, you can click on that and it will take you to the event and most likely give you live scoring as they are playing. It is really slick.
Volunteers Needed If anyone reading this newsletter would like to volunteer to help out at the Tulip Festival, there are many opportunities. I will list the areas that volunteers are needed. If you would be interested in helping in any of these areas, please call 712-707-4510 or email the Tulip Festival office at office@octuplipfestival.com. Help is needed with
Book Reviews
The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey.
The New York Times said it is one of the best mysteries of all time. Well I hate to disagree with the New York Times, but I didn't care much for this book. The author was born in Inverness, Scotland in 1897 and at one time was a physical training instructor (do you remember when they used to call that PT?) She wrote her first book in 1929. This book was written in 1951, the year before she passed away. She had a recurring character in many of her books, Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard. While Inspector Grant is recovering in the hospital from a broken leg, he tries to uncover the mystery of Richard III's supposed murder of his two nephews. He feels that Richard III was unjustly accused and tries to prove it through the help of the British Museum and an American scholar. If you are really into the royalty of the English from many centuries ago, you might enjoy this novel, however I thought it was kind of boring. This is a short book (206 pages) with a soft cover and sells for $3.00. I only have one copy.
Race of the Century by Julie M. Fenster.
My second book is a completely different story. I'm not quite finished with it yet, but I am loving it. The great part about this book is that it is a true story. My husband read it first and I could tell by his expressions that it was a good book. This is a car race from New York City to Paris, via Alaska, Siberia, Russia and Germany, over 22,000. Get this -- this actually took place in 1908. Can you believe that they raced cars, almost around the world in 1908. One of the big problems, of course, is that the roads are terrible. They start out by having to shovel snow to get anywhere, and later having to cross over muddy ruts. Each car had from 2 - 4 people to help fix the cars, help drive, and record everything that was happening. Iowa was on their route and they crossed completely over the whole state. I am enjoying this book completely. It is a hard cover book, copywritten in 2005 and is 387 pages long. It won't be available for about a week (I have to finish it first), but it sells for $4.00 and I have only one copy.
Letters from Ralph by Lee and Bonnie Meier.
This book contains the letters that Ralph Mouw wrote home to his parents from 1941 (before Pearl Harbor was bombed) until after the war. Because letters were censored and you couldn't say a lot about the war efforts, my husband added information between each letter as to what was actually happening in the world. The reason I'm mentioning this book again is that it is on sale. Normally it sells for $39.95, but we are selling the few we still have on the shelf for $25.00. It is a hard cover book containing 243 pages with a nice picture of Lee and me on the book flap. I believe that we have three on hand, before I order more again. |
