Letters From Ralph

book.gif

Ralph J. Mouw, a native of Orange City, Iowa, never forgot his roots - even when he was halfway across the world during World War II.

In this collection of letters, you'll find a firsthand account of what life was like during the war at home and overseas. Although letters were heavily censored during the war years, the editors have added comments to place them in context.

Wooden Shoes at a Discount
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

We just received our first order of plain wooden shoes after taking inventory. I try to keep at least 6 pairs of each size (ranges in size from 12 cm to 33 cm). If you need a pair of wooden shoes and are participating in the Tulip Festival in any way, we give a $3.00 discount to encourage people to take part in the parade, the dances, the street scrubbing, etc. So, if you purchase a pair of wooden shoes from Jubon Juweelen, be sure and tell us if you will be using them in the festival. We also have wooden shoes with the red soles as well as the traditional shoes. We only have two pairs of wedding shoes left and they are very small. At this time, we can't order any new because the man who made these in Holland passed away. Hopefully, we will find a new source soon. We also have the carpet slippers and garden clogs, which are fun alternatives to the actual wooden shoes.

Extravaganza
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

On March 23 the 2022 Tulip Festival Extravaganza will be held at the Event Center starting at 11:30 a.m. This is kind of the official kickoff of our Tulip Festival activities. At the Extravaganza the Queen and her court model their new Dutch costumes and will present their traveling road show. The parade marshalls are announced and introduced and usually a selection from the night show is presented. The Ambassadors will be serving the meal as soon as people sit down and it is usually a very enjoyable event.

Members of the 2022 Tulip Court are Queen Naomi Mellema, daughter of Matt and Kristin Mellema, court members Maren Beaty, daughter of Craig and Shannon Beaty, Chloe Bilby, daughter of Joe & Becky Bilby, Catharine Hummel, daughter of Patrick & Julia Hummel, and Kate Van Der Werff, daughter of Jeff and Kara Van Der Werff.

Tickets are $20 and are available now at the Tulip Festival Windmill Office on Hwy 10, by calling 712-707-4510 or on the festival web site. A livestream of the event will also be available.

Other events you should be aware of that you might want to sign up for:

Applications open for ArtBurst and Craft Show vendors

Registration open for the Road Race and Tour de Tulips Bike Ride

T-shirts
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

We are in the process of having some new tee shirts printed for the Tulip Festival. If you liked the tile and magnets we have with the Chamber windmill pictured, you'll like the tee shirts. We are still debating material and colors of shirts, but it looks like we can have the same colors on the shirts as on the tile. We don't know what the price will be, but I'm hoping that whatever we get we can sell out at the Tulip Festival so that we can order a new design next year. We have very few of the old tee shirts left. I believe we have 5 left that the city had printed sometime ago. They are in very small sizes and sell for $5.00 each. I have two left of the grey shirts with the windmill that Jubon Juweelen had printed about two years ago, but they are in size XXX and sell for $41.00 each. This year we hope to get a large variety of sizes from very small to quite large, but we will have limited amounts in each size.

Disc Golf 2022 Tour
By Owner: Bonnie Meier and Juliana Korver

The best laid plans of mice and men ... Juliana and Jim Oates would just be starting their Disc Golf Pro Tour this week only about three weeks ago, Jim had chest pains. After going to the emergency room and then spending 14 days in the hospital, their plans have changed somewhat. After an unsuccessful operation to try to put stents in his heart, Jim had successful quadruple bypass surgery on February 8. So Juliana is his caretaker until he is ready to travel again. Did I mention that they became engaged on Juliana's birthday? They plan on being married after pro tour is over in our little Presbyterian Church in Alton, Iowa (in October). So the first tournament that Juliana will be participating in will be the St. Patrick's Classic presented by Final 9 Sports. That will be held in Orangevale, California and Juliana will be playing in the open female class. The next weekend she will be playing in the open female in the Oakland City Disc Golf Championship by Innova. That's about the time the next newsletter will be coming out. I imagine it will be awhile before Jim can play again, but I'm sure we'll see him out there in the future once his healing is complete. We feel very fortunate that he is still with us. Hearts are nothing to mess around with. If he hadn't gone into the doctor when he did, this could have been a much sadder commentary.

On a different note, yesterday Infinite Discs released the new G-Blend Juliana Korver Kon Tikis. The Kon Tiki has a flight similar to an old dx stingray. It has a turn of -3 which means that it is very easy to get this disc to fly to the right for a right handed back hand throw. It is a great disc for wooded touch shots, beginners, and rollers.

Help support Juliana this year by purchasing a Juliana Korver Kon Tiki.

Book Reviews
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

The Risk Pool by Richard Russo.

I am not finished reading this, but I am enjoying it completely. I love a book that when you pick it up, you feel that you are visiting family and are anxious to see what happens next. It is the story of a young boy who grew up during the same period I did (50s and 60s) and was raised by two very dysfunctional parents. This is a fairly long book (about 500 pages) and is a soft cover. We have one copy and it sells for $3.00. I may add more to this next month if anything unexpected happens, but it is a nice read.

Promising Land by Rene Clement.

Mr. Clement came to our tulip festival I believe in 2010 and took many pictures of families, people in Dutch costume, and scenes from around the area, often staging unique pictures. It contains beautiful, large photographs with all printing both in Dutch and English. The book normally sells for $35.00, but if you order one (or stop by our little house store) before the Tulip Festival, we will sell it for $20. At the Festival prices will go back to the normal $35.00. We have several copies. This is a beautiful hard cover book that is 96 pages long.

Of Dutch Ways by Helen Colijn.

I actually reviewed this book last month, only I had just started reading it and the review wasn't complete. The main thing I discovered as I completed this book, was what a great book it is for anyone planning a trip to the Netherlands. Appendix B contains four pages of useful addresses including information on planned beach walks, bicycle events, information on hiking on tidal flats and many Netherlands National Tourist Offices located in Michigan, New York, California and several places in Canada. There is also a section about the Dutch who came to the U.S.A. and mentions Orange City. This would make a nice gift for anyone who appreciates the Dutch. It sells for $13.00 and I have several copies.
