Letters From Ralph

book.gif

Ralph J. Mouw, a native of Orange City, Iowa, never forgot his roots - even when he was halfway across the world during World War II.

In this collection of letters, you'll find a firsthand account of what life was like during the war at home and overseas. Although letters were heavily censored during the war years, the editors have added comments to place them in context.

Christmas Chocolate
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

We just received our Christmas chocolates. We only got the dark chocolate letters this year. They sell for $3.40 each. The small Dutch Santas (good stocking stuffers) sell for $1.80 and, something new this year, speculaas (windmill) shaped caramel/seasalt chocolates sell for $6.75 for a package. Call early if you want letters because we often run out of particular ones.

End of the Year Sales
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

I'll put more details in the next newsletter, but between Christmas and New Years we will have our biggest sale of the year. Different items will be 50% off for one day only. That is the time to stock up on thread, chocolate and other items. We are slowly getting rid of all our notions, but we still have lots of books, puzzles, Dutch items and more.

Vendor Fairs
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

We just took part in a vendor fair, called a Holiday Boutique, in the Sioux Center Library. There is another one coming up in Orange City in December, but I don't have any details on that yet. Traditionally it has been held in the Town Hall downtown. I will send out another message with the dates when I have that information. This is a good time to pick up stocking stuffers and a few little extra things for Christmas.

Disc Golf
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

On October 26 Juliana and Jim Oates were married in the Alton Presbyterian Church. They now have a little break from the tour season before they start again in February. In the meantime they left some collectible disc golf items for Jubon Juweelen to sell. I'm hoping to get them all listed online on Shop Iowa, but I'm in the process of that now. I have almost 25 collectible discs to sell ranging in price from $10.00 to $80.00, a couple of nice shirts, a new disc golf towel, a hat and a couple of new quivrs.

Book Reviews
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

Paradise by Dante (translated by Anthony Esolen).

I've been reading a three book series written by Dante Alighieri 700 years ago. I just started the last book in the series. I am also taking a college class along with it to help explain everything. The original was written as a poem in Italian. I've read about the Inferno and Purgatory and I'm just starting to read about Heaven or Paradise.

Death in Zanzibar by M. M. Kaye.

I needed to read a good "who done it" book just for my own relaxation and I picked a good one. This is a book written by English writer M.M. Kaye who has been compared to Agatha Christie. It is hard to put down and I love those kind of books. Mary Margaret Kaye was a British writer who was born in Shimla, India in 1908. She died in 2004 and wrote through 1999 when she was in her middle 90s. Her genre is historical fiction which I love. The book takes place on Zanzibar which is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean. It is now part of the United Republic of Tanzania, but the book was written before they united. This is a hard cover book that sells for $4.00 and I only have one copy.

Pocket Sized Cookbooks by Hearts & Tummies.

These are little 3 1/2" x 5" books that are each devoted to one topic. Most sell for $5.95 and a few for $6.95. They are all brand new and would make wonderful stocking stuffers, or if you just want to give a little something to someone, they would make nice individual gifts. Some of the titles are "Citrus, Citrus, Citrus", "Recipes for Desserts with Wine", "Cooking with things that go Oink", "Cooking with Seafood and Poultry", "Nuts, Nuts, Nuts", "Good Cookin' from the Plain People" and many more. Almost every state is featured in its own book. Stop over and see the whole selection or give us a call and I can read the titles to you (712-737-8920).
