Letters From Ralph

book.gif

Ralph J. Mouw, a native of Orange City, Iowa, never forgot his roots - even when he was halfway across the world during World War II.

In this collection of letters, you'll find a firsthand account of what life was like during the war at home and overseas. Although letters were heavily censored during the war years, the editors have added comments to place them in context.

Vendor Fair
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

Thursday, Friday, Saturday, December 9 - 11 there will be a Vendor Fair in the Orange City Town Hall. Jubon Juweelen will have a booth there and it will include Chocolate St. Nicks (small $1.50 and medium size $2.00), Dutch letters, Cholocate mints and dark chocolate caramels with sea salt, some Dutch ornaments, small wooden shoes, Stroop waffles, etc. etc. It will be right here in Orange City, so if I don't have something that you want there, I can run home and get it or at least bring it the next day. I won't be taking all our wooden shoes over to the town hall, but if you want a pair, call me ahead of time and I'll make sure and have what you want there. There will also be a punch card with prizes for attending local merchants and that will include many of us at the Vendor's Fair.

We just completed the Vendor Fair at the Sioux Center library and were pleased that we sold a little bit of many of the things we had taken over there. They have a Holiday Boutique in their library before Thanksgiving every year.

Learning Venmo
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

I'm sure the younger generation thinks this isn't a big deal, but I'm pleased to say that I think I know enough about Venmo now, that I can take payments that way. I understand that Venmo is a product of PayPal and is a way to transfer money without a lot of hassle. I'm still not too confident about how it works, but Jubon's Venmo account is @Bonnie-Meier-3. So, that should give you another option if you want to pay for something, besides, credit cards, checks or cash.

Pre Inventory Sale
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

Our biggest sale of the year will be starting on Monday, December 27. On that day, we will be marking all notions down 50%. This is a one day sale, so if you have any notions you need, please come in Monday from 10:07 a.m. - 5:13 p.m. We no longer have any Clover products available (knitting needles, crochet hooks, etc.) so we don't have quite as much selection as last year. However, we still have a full line of Gutermann thread, many unique Dill buttons, as well as several other items.

Tuesday, December 28 we will feature disc golf items. We still have a nice selection of discs although they are much harder to get this year. I put in an order not long ago and they only had 4 models available and I had to order them between 9:00 a.m. - noon and they wouldn't have any more available for a couple of weeks. The Pandemic has been good for disc golf. It has grown in popularity by leaps and bounds. So there has been a much greater demand for discs and production of discs is evidently not up to full production yet.

Wednesday, December 29 we will feature wooden shoes, wooden shoe slippers and garden clogs. All these items will be 50% off, however, it only pertains to items that we have on hand (not items that we have to send for). The idea is the we cut down our inventory before January so we don't have to count as many items.

Thursday, December 30 is our miscellaneous sale day. Anything that was not on sale the other days this week will be 50% off this day. That includes books, puzzles, Dutch items (other shoes and food), jewelry, etc.

Friday, December 31 will be the last day of our big sale. On that day all Dutch food that we have on hand will be 50% off. Currently we still have a nice selection of chocolates, cookies, strop waffles, some licorice and white peppermints. However, we're hoping to sell quite a bit of that at our vendor sales so we don't know how many will be left.

Book Reviews
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

The Keepsake by Tess Gerritsen.

This is a suspense novel that takes place in a private museum in Boston and starts with the discovery of an old mummy in the basement. It has all the suspense of a good mystery and was a good read. The book was published in 2008 and is a hard cover with 349 pages. Ms. Gerrisen is a physician and is an internationally bestselling author. I have one copy and it sells for $4.00.

Great Lakes Shipwrecks & Survivals The Edmund Fitzgergald Edition by William Ratigan.

This book is not for sale (yet). My husband and daughter both want to read it before I sell it. It was first Copyrighted in 1960, but the fourth addition was printed in 1980. Lee and I took a mini vacation this year to the northern region of Lake Superior. We found a little book store (my favorite kind of store) and I asked if they had anything about the shipwrecks on the Great Lakes. He had a marvelous collection and this was the book I chose. I had no idea there had been so many shipwrecks on the Lakes. And many of them were very mysterious. They just disappeared. This is a collection of true stories that are probably stranger than fiction.

Hippocrene Standard Dictionary Dutch-English English-Dutch by Arseen Rkjckaert.

We have had Dutch-English dictionaries in the store before, but this is a very comprehensive book and the 4th printing was in 2005. It is a new 9" x 6" soft cover book that sells for $24.95. It has over 35,000 entries with pronunciation for each English entry and a basic pronunciation chart for the Dutch language. I have a couple of copies on-hand and can get more if people are interested.
