Christmas Chocolates Arriving Mid October
Before our next newsletter the Dutch Christmas Chocolates ordered sometime ago should start arriving. We didn't order quite as many chocolate letters this year, so come in or call early to save special letters. We will be getting in both milk chocolate and dark chocolate letters. We will also be getting in some Dutch Santas and sea salt caramels. The sea salt caramels have been our most popular chocolates over the past couple of years. Lee and I don't mind if they don't sell, because we love to eat those ourselves, however, it would probably be better for us, health-wise, if they did sell. The small chocolate St. Nicks will sell for $1.20 each and are nice stocking stuffers. We will also be selling boxes of Steenland Sinterklaas chocolates (similar to the small chocolate wooden shoes, only in Christmas shapes) for $4.00 a box. The Droste milk chocolate/orange crisps will also be coming.
Holiday Boutique at Sioux Center Library
It feels like it is a little early to be thinking about Christmas already (I still have my fan on because of the warm weather), however, Christmas will be here before you know it. On November 23 Renae Vander Schaaf and I will have a booth at the Holiday Boutique at the Sioux Center Library. We asked to have the same spot that we had last year. That was out in the hallway where everyone had to walk past us to get into the two large rooms of Holiday items. We will mostly be sharing books with you, but Jubon Juweelen will also have Christmas chocolates available. The books we will be featuring include the book that Renae wrote about "Doc" Neumann, the Dutch cookbook that Renae and I wrote together and "Letters from Ralph" written by Lee and me. We will also have several other books available, many written by local people. All booth fees go to support Sioux Center's summer reading program.
New Golf Discs
Not long ago we received a new supply of discs for disc golf. We also received a box of minis with Jubon Juweelen's name and new address printed on them. We will give a free mini with the sale of each new disc. I especially asked for many new tie- dye discs this time. I believe most of them are drivers, but come shop for some of the latest discs at our little home-based store.
In a recent notice from UPS, it stated that 56% of consumers actively track all their deliveries. If you ship UPS, you are given the tracking information immediately and we can enter your e-mail so that they will notify you when the package is delivered. This year Thanksgiving comes on November 28, which is later than usual. That means that the online shopping and shipping holiday season is a week shorter than normal. So, this year UPS is offering pickup and delivery service in all areas on Friday, November 29. UPS recommends that for UPS Ground, you get your packages in by Friday, December 13 (this depends on where you are shipping, but to be safe, try to have your ground packages ready to send by December 13). Thursday, December 19 is the last day they recommend for Christmas delivery for UPS 3 Day Select. Friday, December 20 for UPS 2 nd Day Air and Monday, December 23 for UPS Next Day Air. Of course those later services get a lot more expensive.
Some changes this holiday season
UPS Service Guarantee for UPS Ground shipments will be suspended from December 2 - December 24.
From November 25 - December 27, a limited number of UPS ground and standard packages with transit times of three or more days will require additional time in transit.
A limited number of UPS 2 nd Day Air picked up December 16 - 18 and UPS 3 Day Select packages picked up December 16 and 17 may require an additional day in transit.
The bottom line is to try to get your UPS packages ready to send as soon after Thanksgiving as possible.
Juliana wins Silver at the World Urban Games
The first ever World Urban Games was held September 13-15 in Budapest, Hungary. There were 6 competitive sports included in the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) governed event. The sports included Breaking, BMX Freestyle, Roller Freestyle, Parkour, 3x3 Basketball, and Flying Disc Freestyle. It was in the Flying Disc Freestyle that Juliana competed with her partner for this event, Ryan Young from Seattle, WA. For Flying Disc Freestyle, there were 12 teams competing from 9 countries. The USA had two teams in the event. The competition consisted of a preliminary round after which 4 of the 12 teams were cut. The next morning there was a semi final round after which 2 more teams were cut so 6 teams made it to the finals. Juliana and her partner won their pool in both the preliminary round and the semi finals. They were the top seed in their pool. The other American team was the top seed in the other pool and they also won both the preliminary round and the semi finals. The finals consisted of 2 teams from the USA, 2 teams from Italy, a German team and the team from Poland.
The fabulous part of this whole event is that you could follow the whole thing on the Olympic Channel on your computer. I watched the preliminary rounds after they happened. I haven't seen the semi-finals yet, but the finals I watched live on Saturday morning (late afternoon in Budapest). Juliana and Ryan came in 2nd behind the other American team. After the competition I watched the awards ceremony where they played the United States Anthem and the three teams stood on the podium. It was so cool to be watching it as it happened.
The World Urban Games will take place again in 2021. Budapest has the first right of refusal to host the event in 2021. It is uncertain if Flying Disc Freestyle will be a part of the event in 2021 as there are some very steep hurdles the relatively small sport needs to clear before meeting the criteria to attend. But it is safe to say that the sport had a great showing and all involved including the organizers in Budapest and administrators of GAISF were impressed by Flying Disc Freestyle.
If you want to watch Juliana's routine, here are the links to each round and to a few recaps.
Preliminary Round: Advance forward to 20:30 to see Juliana and Ryan.
Semi Final Round: Advance forward to 18:15 to see Juliana and Ryan. This was their best run through of the routine.
Final Round: Advance forward to 35:20 to see Juliana and Ryan.
