Letters From Ralph

book.gif

Ralph J. Mouw, a native of Orange City, Iowa, never forgot his roots - even when he was halfway across the world during World War II.

In this collection of letters, you'gll find a firsthand account of what life was like during the war at home and overseas. Although letters were heavily censored during the war years, the editors have added comments to place them in context.

Send your packages UPS at Jubon Juweelen
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

We still handle UPS packages at our location, 204 Iowa Ave NW. Anything processed before 3:20 p.m. will be shipped out that day. We have been learning a lot lately. One of our customers has been shipping items to other countries and we are learning how to handle custom charges, etc. It is much easier shipping in the USA, but we can handle foreign shipments as well.

Vender's Fair
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

We have used our building to host several Vendor's Fairs the last couple of months. I don't know enough about the future yet to tell you if we will be having more. IF we haven't sold the building by April 11 & 12, we will take part in Orange City's Spring Fling. By the end of March, we will know for sure if we will be taking part. So we will talk about that in the next newsletter. When we do have a Vendor's Fair we divide the front end of the building into ten stalls and have a wide variety of different products represented from quite an area. We already have several signed up for the next event, IF we have one.

Tulip Festival
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

Remember if anyone wants one of the new Tulip Festival brochures, just e-mail us and we will send you one. They are very nice and give a good summary of all the activities plus a daily schedule. Jubon Juweelen will again be running the Straat Winkel which is a little store located at the entrance of the Straatmarkt. We will be selling Dutch items such as wooden shoes, Delft, tee shirts and art work. We will open at 10:00 a.m. each morning of the Tulip Festival and will stay open until after the parade. We are located just north of the Court House where they will be holding Artburst & an Authors Corner on Friday and Saturday.

Books
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

One of the major items we carry is books, both new and used. I thought I would review some of our selections in this newsletter. My husband and I both read a lot so we can usually recommend some good reads if you need advice.

One of the latest books that I have read is entitled "Daughter of the Regiment" by Stephanie Grace Whitson. This is the story of an Irish immigrant from Missouri whose brothers end up fighting on the side of the Union. Their neighbors are fighting for the south and it is an interesting human interest novel about how the war affected some of the people in Missouri. I only have one copy of this book and it sells for $3.00 (first come, first served).

Another book I read this past year is "Death and the Dutch Uncle" by Patricia Moyes. This is a suspense novel that takes place in Holland. This is also a good used book and sells for $4.00 (one copy available).

One of the new books we carry is called "Mist Falcon" which is Book one of The Warrior Poet Archives. This was written by Ryan J. Doughan from Orange City. I haven't read this one yet, but it looks good and sells for $15.95.

We also have a large selection of Bibles as we purchased the inventory that the Dove store had on hand when they went out of business. I'll review some more books in our next newsletter.

Frsibee Travels

For the third year in a row, my Daughter, Juliana Korver, will be traveling to Prague in the Czech Republic to participate in a Freestyle Frisbee Tournament. This is a large indoor event that draws players from all over the world. So far this year, there are registered players from: the United States, Poland, Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Hungary, Norway, Columbia, and the United Kingdom. Juliana will be competing in 3 categories: women's pairs with partner Ilka Simon from Germany; mixed pairs with partner James Wiseman from New York City; and open pairs with with partner Jason Saulkey of the United Kingdom. Last year Juliana and Ilka placed first in women's pairs. To get an idea of what this sport looks like, here is their routine from last year. Juliana is the one wearing the hat. Following the event in Prague, Juliana and many of the other participants will be going to Tel Aviv, Israel, for the first International Freestyle event in Israel.

For those who aren't familiar with Freesyle, I describe it as dancing with discs. Juliana says it is tricks with a Frisbee, but ideally it is a combination of both with the tricks ideally done in a beautiful, flowing way to music.

Remember we still have just as many discs for sale at our new location (204 Iowa Avenue NW) as we had at the downtown store. We have a little sign in front that says whether we are open or closed. We are trying to keep similar hours to what we had a year ago, however, if we are running an errand it may say closed. I'll usually have a little sign next to it telling when we will be back or where we have gone.
