Letters From Ralph

Ralph J. Mouw, a native of Orange City, Iowa, never forgot his roots - even when he was halfway across the world during World War II.

In this collection of letters, you'gll find a firsthand account of what life was like during the war at home and overseas. Although letters were heavily censored during the war years, the editors have added comments to place them in context.

Moving Time and the First Sale in our New location
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

The day after the Festival we started moving some things to our new location, 204 Iowa Avenue NW. Several years ago we built a little hobby room on the back of our garage. It is a very cozy room made of knotty pine. It was Lee's and my first tiling project. Since then we have laid our own tile in four more rooms in the house. Juliana helped us put up a nice rack from Innova in which to display our golf discs and the moving process is under way. We made our first sale Monday morning when a young man from Wisconsin came in the shop looking for golf discs. We only had a few left in the store and I asked him if he would like to see more. Lee took him to our new location and he bought several discs including an autographed putter with Juliana's name on it. I think our move will be a very positive one for Lee and myself. At the new location, we will continue to sell books, golf discs, and Gutermann thread. There may be more items that follow us to the new location, but not too many. We are still looking at the possibility of someone purchasing the wooden shoe business. However, if we can't find someone to take it over, we will keep those, too.

Big Sales Coming
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

As we move the items we plan to keep to our new location, we will be trying to liquidate those that we will not continue to sell. So, starting next week everything that is left in the store will be on sale. We will be closed Memorial Day, but May 29 June 2 everything will be 10% off. The next week, June 4 9 everything will be 20% off. That includes the display cases and anything else that can be moved. The checkout counter will stay with the building because I don't think it would even fit through the door. June 11 16 will see 30% off everything, June 18 23 everything will be 40% off and after June 25, everything will be 50% off. We are planning on having an online auction with anything that is left. Originally I was hoping to do that during the month of July, but now we are leaning toward doing that the month of August. We should know the dates for sure by our next newsletter.

By the way, we plan on continuing this newsletter. It started before Jubon Juweelen was born and it will continue in its new location. The newsletter started with Jubon, LLC, which was an interactive Internet business, but morphed into our retail store. We are contemplating doing a little more with e-bay in our new location.

Wonderful Tulip Festival
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

This year we had beautiful weather for our festival. Our tulips were almost perfect and we had very little rain. We did cancel the Saturday evening parade because of rain, but by then we had had two and a half days of great events. Jubon Juweelen manned the Straatwinkel again (the Orange City Steering Committee's little store). I was very grateful for my daughter, Juliana, coming to help me. She basically ran the Straatwinkel, which was very busy this year. Last year it was so cold we had to put a heater in to keep from being very uncomfortable. This year we had a fan Thursday and Friday. In fact there was one lady who studied some of the things on one wall for a long time. I knew she was just enjoying the fan because it was pretty warm outside. All in all we think the Festival was a great success and I appreciate all the work that Alicia, Arlys, Louise and Margaret did because both the store and the Straatwinkel were very busy. We also had Dan Hurt here in his Dutch costume helping people fit wooden shoes, slippers and clogs. Thank you to all of you.

Perusing our Guest Book
By Owner: Bonnie Meier

Jubon Juweelen has a wooden board with the map of the United States on it near our guest book. Each state has a block attached to it that can be rotated to show that someone from that state visited our store. This month, the board is useless in telling us where people visited from due to the fact that during the Tulip Festival, someone rotated every block on the board. However, we still kept a guest book, so we'll just report those who signed that. Since last month people have signed our guest book from Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin and all over Iowa.
